TRC Fanfic: Li(f)e
Another TRC fanfic. I got bored, okay? (Even though I'm supposed to be doing school work... Well, I'll get to that in a while.) Reading poetry got me into writing again, so here I am.
There is a lot of foreshadowing in this fic. It's extremely obvious in the title and the last line, which probably won't make any sense to you if you haven't read past the Tokyo arc. If you know TRC well enough, you can guess where this story fits in.

Prompted by some instinct, the bespectacled archaeologist looked up from his dusty work. From a distance, he spotted his most frequent visitor - a pretty emerald-eyed girl in fine robes meant only for the nobility. She was calling and waving her arms as widely as she could. The archaeologist smiled knowingly and nodded in acknowledgement. He turned to his diligent little assistant, who had not yet noticed their visitor.
"Syaoran," he said gently. The little assistant stopped working at last and looked up with expressionless brown eyes. The archaeologist smiled at him. "Well, Syaoran, I think you have a visitor." He nodded towards the little girl.
Mechanically, the young boy turned in that direction. The little girl had skipped over mounds of freshly dug earth, getting her fine robes dirty, and was running as quickly as she could manage towards them. When the time she finally closed the distance, she skidded to a halt, panting heavily.
"Greetings, Princess. What brings you here today?" asked the archaeologist, bending towards the little girl and smiling his usual kind smile.
"Good day, Mr Fujitaka," she greeted promptly. "I wanted to see Syaoran!" she answered, beaming.
"Of course; but does your father know?" inquired Fujitaka.
"Yes. Father wanted to send someone to find out if everything here is okay. I asked him if I could go and he said I could," said Sakura. She looked at Syaoran, who had not moved from his place and was quietly watching the transaction. "So, Syaoran, can you play now?" she asked hopefully.
Syaoran stared at his feet. This made Fujitaka frown slightly. Unlike most other boys, Syaoran did not quite know how to get along with people.
Getting worried, Sakura hastily added, "It's okay if you don't want to play, Syaoran. I'll understand. I just thought, maybe... maybe..."
Fujitaka put a hand on his assistant's shoulder. "It's all right, Syaoran," he said gently, "Take a break. Go and play with Princess Sakura for a while." He smiled when Syaoran looked up at him. "I won't be working on my own - there are some very diligent men here who can help me. So don't worry and just have fun, okay?"
Syaoran continued to stare at Fujitaka for a moment before nodding in silence.
Sakura cheered. "Yay! Come on, Syaoran!" Playfully, she grabbed his hand and pulled him along. "Faster, faster, Syaoran! There is something I want to show you today..."
Syaoran followed obligingly, stumbling at first before matching his pace with Sakura's. She was clearly excited. Fujitaka watched, smiling, as the two children walked away from the ruins, hand in hand. He turned to gaze at the horizon.
Maybe there really was hope in the boy's future after all.
